Claudia Arashiro´s sterling silver jewelry exemplifies state-of-the-art contemporary jewelry. She recognizes and works with the intrinsic characteristics of materials while exploring design concepts.

A new life path opened for Claudia: Metalsmithing
Claudia, a graphic designer from Buenos Aires University, Argentina, worked in the graphic industry for several years and in her husband’s engineering studio before moving to Canada. Claudia took some jewellery courses with Flavia Mina and Mabel Peña in Buenos Aires before settling in Ontario, where she currently lives. After that, she has mastered her art by practicing on her own, reading books and attentively watching experienced jewelers create. Below is her Brothers Necklace, sterling silver and glass.
She’s, currently displaying her work at www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk. About her work, Claudia says: “I grew up surrounded by art thanks to my family who taught me to enjoy words like beauty, color, balance and harmony. The pleasure of being in contact with the metal started in me by making a variety of wire sculptures. Afterwards I realized that I was working and designing jewellery as sculptures that could be worn”.
Honest design for a contemporary style
Claudia summons her jewelry work as: “Pieces of imagination…beyond visual and artistic sense, a blend of personality, feelings and pleasure”.Below Claduia´s 15 and 50 Necklace, sterling silver and pearls.
Her sterling silver jewelry arises from straightforward forms that are meant to serve the functional aspects of the piece. Her jewelry reflects the character of the metal, the attributes of the tools used upon the metal and the manufacturing process. The result is a unified product, a coherent whole, blending all the design elements following a visual image.
Jewelry design requires both a study of graphic drawing and work with materials and tools. To the right you can see her fantastic Box Bracelet, sterling silver.
Obviously, being a professional graphic designer herself, helps allot. The geometric aesthetic found in Claudia’s jewelry makes me think about graphic symbols, building powerful directions and axes that expresses and at the same time appeals an intellectual response. In Claudia’s own words: “Geometry, nature and pure shapes flow in my mind when I come in contact with metal. Aesthetic senses have been present in my life together with my first memories. My family always surrounded me by art in all its expressions… Probably this was the way in which I learnt to value the blend of beauty, balance and spirituality that converge in design”. Claudia, your fascination with jewelry making shines through, thanks for sharing!
